Pamela Miles
Pamela Miles, founding president of the Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies (I*ACT), is an integrative health care consultant and Reiki master. She has 35 years experience as a clinician, educator and lecturer in natural healing and has been a student of meditation and yoga for 45 years. Ms. Miles began practicing Reiki in 1986 and was initiated as a Reiki master in 1990. Her background in Asian spiritual practice and philosophy led her to question aspects of what she had been taught and to actively supplement her initial training through research and mentoring from Reiki masters taught by Hawayo Takata, the Reiki master who brought the practice from Japan to the US in the late 1930s. Ms. Miles is a voice for maintaining Takata's standards through comprehensive training and an uncomplicated practice that includes regular self-treatment.
Ms. Miles has developed Reiki programs in prominent New York City hospitals, published in peer-reviewed medical journals (papers available on this website under resources/articles), and presented and taught Reiki at medical schools and conferences. As a content expert, she has participated in the design, implementation and analysis of clinical trials on Reiki. Ms. Miles serves on the editorial boards of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine and Advances in Mind-Body Medicine, and the advisory board of the Integrative Pediatrics Council and Tri-State College of Acupuncture. She is the author of REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide (Tarcher/Penguin), the first mainstream book on the practice, which has been translated into Italian and Dutch.
In addition to her consulting work for hospitals, medical schools, and other organizations, Ms. Miles has an active private practice, serving as a consultant for physicians on complex cases and working with individuals in person or on the phone. Many of her clients wish to maintain their well-being or enhance their sense of spiritual connectedness; others seek healing while addressing conditions such as chronic pain; cancer; insomnia; anxiety; depression; heart disease; infectious disease; chronic fatigue; Crohn's disease; Lyme disease; irritable bowel syndrome; arthritis; headaches; infertility; back pain; bipolar disorder; allergies, asthma and auto-immune disorders. Ms. Miles's approach is to relieve suffering, enhance awareness, and empower clients with tools of self-healing, useful both in disease prevention and in support of conventional medical treatment. This can be accomplished through individual consultations or customized healing retreats.
Ms. Miles particularly values working with parents and children of all ages, encouraging families to create a healing lifestyle that includes practicing Reiki on themselves and one another. She offers compassionate end of life care, providing pain management, peace of mind, and guidance for patients, families and caregivers. Her writing on Reiki and natural healing has appeared in both professional and popular publications.

*Just amazingly wonderful and inspiring.
*Peaceful, nourishing, and stimulating, the kind of Reiki community I long for.
*The retreat deepened my understanding of the precepts; I had just been touching the surface.
*I feel empowered to continue contemplating the precepts in daily life.
*You created a safe, nurturing environment for exploration.
*This exploration created a significant deepening in my practice, so much so that friends noticed a difference when we shared treatment.

In this class, I offer you everything I've learned over 20 years of organizing events. Public Reiki events are a service to the public and to the Reiki community. When you organize events, you introduce Reiki to new audiences, create Reiki community, and give Reiki students and practitioners an opportunity to develop their clinical skills. This class gives you what you need to know to create a successful public Reiki event in which everyone feels supported—staff, clients and YOU.
Specifically, I will explain how to:
* identify and approach organizations to host an event
* organize event logistics
* communicate clearly with practitioners and the public
* find, prepare, and support your practitioners and clients
* obtain and utilize feedback.

Consultations
Consultations are available in person in New York City as well as by phone. A session includes Reiki healing, intuitive counseling, and discussion of other interventions, for self-care and professional care, that may be helpful in maintaining well-being.
Reiki healing retreats
Clients may choose to jumpstart a period of healing through a sequence of four or more Reiki treatments on consecutive days. Consultation and treatment sessions can be augmented with additional healing exercises to be done at home, as per the client's wishes.
Intensive healing retreats
Clients with chronic disease, or those seeking to deepen their inner spiritual connection, may choose to immerse themselves in a multidisciplinary healing retreat, in which clients remain voluntarily sequestered for a predetermined period of time (usually 7 to 10 days) in a setting free from distractions. During the retreat, clients receive extensive Reiki treatment and individualized training in Reiki, meditation, and hatha yoga, and there is time for daily contemplative practices such as journaling and art. When needed other practitioners are brought in to provide additional expertise and treatment. Each intensive is designed specifically for the individual client.
Reiki classes
First degree classes are given frequently and Second degree classes are given periodically in New York City. Classes are usually organized to meet on three evenings over a week. Students begin practicing at the first meeting, and have the opportunity to practice at home and bring their questions back to the class, creating on-going support during the first week of home practice. First degree classes are occasionally taught on a weekend, or organized in other formats when needed. Private classes can be arranged. Reiki master training is by apprenticeship only. Sign up here to be notified of classes. Be sure to click the second option to be informed of First degree classes. Sign up for Second degree classes, Reiki Reunions and Reiki Two Tutor if you have already taken First degree training with Pamela.

Even seasoned Reiki practitioners face major challenges integrating Reiki into conventional healthcare settings. Successful collaboration requires skillful communication, an understanding of medical culture, knowledge of Reiki research, and impeccable professionalism.
Topics to be covered in this class include:
* finding credible language that communicates effectively to both medical professionals and the public
* how and why Reiki treatment is being used in hospitals
* an overview of Reiki research
* the standards you will be expected to meet
* the clinical skills you will need in order to practice in these environments.
During this class, you will be coached in writing your introductory Reiki statement. You will leave the weekend able to self-evaluate your skills and experience, and with suggestions how to continue honing your ability to work effectively in all settings, including conventional health care.
Register at the Open Center website or by calling 212.219.2527.
Pamela is also offering these classes outside of the New York City area (Toronto in September 2008). Click the Travel Schedule tab. If the class you want is not being offered in your locale, you may want to consider hosting a class.

MONTHLY JCC REIKI CLINIC
Held the first Thursday evening of each month: Thursdays, Nov 4, Dec 4, Jan 8 (due to New Year's), etc. Preregistration is requested (see below).
This is an opportunity for Reiki students and practitioners of any lineage to practice Reiki together in a supervised clinical setting using treatment tables. We will offer and receive treatment from one another and offer treatment to the public. There is time to discuss your experience and be mentored.
Reiki students/practitioners are asked to arrive in time to start at 6:30 PM, giving us time to meet one another before we start practicing. We will also have time to discuss our experience and ask questions after the three treatment sessions. Practitioners will finish by 9 PM at the latest.
Anyone who is not a Reiki student who would like to experience Reiki is invited to sign up to receive a 30-minute table treatment from 2-3 practitioners simultaneously (depending on attendance), with the option to register for the 7, 7:30 or 8 PM treatment slots.
Preregistration guarantees your space. We will do our best to accommodate walk-ins. You can also register by phone 646.505.5708.
There is a $20 fee to participate in the Reiki clinic, for Reiki practitioners as well as the public. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the I*ACT Reiki program which provides Reiki treatment to patients at St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Please invite your friends to participate. Sign up here to receive announcements of this and other public Reiki events in New York City (be sure to click the 5th box down).

Reiki Second Degree Training
Second degree Reiki training is generally only open to those students whom I have trained in First degree Reiki, and who are practicing daily self-treatment. Practicing Second degree students are welcome to retake the class.
It is necessary to attend all Second degree sessions in their entirety, and there will be assignments to study and practice between classes, in addition to your daily hands-on practice. You will learn new material and receive another initiation that will enable you to offer distant, non-touch Reiki as well as expanding your hands-on treatment. The fee for this training is $650. The class is kept small and pre-registration is necessary. You can reserve your space with a $250 non-refundable deposit. You can also pay through Paypal by clicking here.

Day or Evening Reiki Reunions
Reunions are a time to come together again to share Reiki, discuss questions that have arisen in our practice, and make new Reiki friends. Whether you have been practicing diligently or have fallen away from your practice, you will find this gathering refreshes and enhances your practice.
These events are open to all my first and second degree Reiki students. We will practice Reiki, share our stories, meditate, and discuss questions appropriate for everyone.
Please note that this is not a re-training session for second degree Reiki. See Reiki Two Tutor below.
It is important to arrive promptly. Latecomers will not be admitted. As when you came for your classes, I request that you do not make plans that require you to leave before we have finished.
Please note that space is limited and pre-registration is necessary. There will be no registration at the door. The fee for the gathering is $50.
